Sometimes people have housing they like, but are worried about losing it. These are some of the reasons people worry that they’ll lose their apartment or the home they own:
- They can't afford to make their monthly rent or mortgage payments.
- They think they are going to lose benefits that help them pay for their housing.
- They think that they can't keep living in the same place because of their disabilities.
- They are having conflicts or disagreements with landlords, neighbors, or their housing management.
If you are in one of these situations, you need to think about:
- Which of these situations has you worried about losing your housing?
- What steps can you take to deal with these problems so you don’t have to move?
- Who can help you?
If you like your current housing, the goal should be to figure out how you can keep living in it. This article will help you figure out the answers to these questions and recommend first steps you can take for different problems you may face.
In some cases, you may have to move. For example, if you rent on the third floor of a building that has no elevator and you need to start using a wheelchair, you will probably have to find a place that either is on the ground floor or has an elevator.
In other situations, you may want to compare whether it makes sense to try and stay in the same place or whether it would make more sense to move to a new place.
This article focuses on ways you can stay in your current housing. If you know you can’t stay in your current housing or want to know about available alternatives if you decide to move, learn more about finding new housing in HB101’s Finding Home article.
