Once you’ve got your team together, start thinking about what life might be like in your own place. What would you do? Would you need help with some things? If so, who would help you?
HB101’s My Day, My Life path helps you think through all of these questions, so that you know what types of services and supports can help you live your best life in the community.
It has three activities that help you figure out how you can enjoy your life and who can help you:
- My Regular Day is an activity that helps you explore all of the normal things that you might do in a day. This includes things like getting up, going to the bathroom, brushing your teeth, eating breakfast, and so on. Even small things. Doing this activity helps you get ready for all of the little things you have to do in life.
- Make Life Fun is about things you’d like to do that go beyond day-to-day life. These are the things that improve our quality of life and become highlights in our lives.
- What If? lets you prepare for emergencies or other problems that might come up.
When you live on your own, you are the leader in your life, but by doing these activities, you can know which people and services will help you when you need help. When you complete them, you can print them out, so that you can keep them in a handy place.
Your Needs & Wants
In addition to knowing who will help you, it’s important to figure out what specific features you’ll need in your housing and think about what you really want. HB101’s Housing Needs & Wants path is a great way for you to think through key things like:
- The area you want to live in
- The type of housing you’d prefer
- Transportation
- Housing features (furniture, laundry, community space, kitchen, and more)
- Accessibility needs (like automatic entry doors, accessible kitchens, or accessible bathrooms), and
- Services needs (with day-to-day activities, medical issues, or 24/7 support staff).
These quick activities will help you start to set priorities in your housing search that will help make it easier for you to narrow down the sort of housing you really want.
